NISO Publishes Recommended Practice PIE-J: Presentation & Identification of E-Journals
On March 27, 2013, NISO announced the publication of a new Recommended Practice: PIE-J: Presentation & Identification of E-Journals (NISO RP-16-2013). This Recommended Practice was developed to provide guidance on the presentation of e-journals.
The Annual Meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA) will be held May 3-8, 2013 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA. Attendees are invited to visit the NLM exhibit booth #226 (May 4-7) to meet NLM staff and see NLM Web products and services.

In 2012, over 5500 new books were added to the collections. As usual, the Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care textbooks were some of the most circulated items, accounting for over half of the total new item circulation. NLM Acquires Collection of Materials Relating to American Civil War Surgeon S. Weir Mitchell
The National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library and a component of the National Institutes of Health, has acquired a collection of over 200 books and periodical issues related to the literary achievements of the prominent American Civil War surgeon S. Weir Mitchell (1829-1914).
National Library of Medicine Announces Updated WISER App
NLM announces an update for the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) app. WISER for iOS 3.0 adds native support for the iPad in addition to support for the iPhone and iPod touch.
PubMed Filters Sidebar Replaces the Limits Page
In order to provide users with a more visible and accessible way to narrow PubMed results, the Limits page will be replaced by a results filter sidebar. The filter sidebar options will work the same way as the limit selections. These changes were implemented in PubMed on May 10, 2012.
PubMed “Results by year” and PubMed Central “PMC images search” tools now display in the discovery column for all PubMed users. These changes were implemented in PubMed on June 18, 2012.
Upcoming PubMed, TOXNET, and Teaching with Technology Classes
Trainers from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and NLM Training Center (NTC) are offering no-cost classes this summer and autumn: “PubMed for Trainers,” “TOXNET and Beyond,” and “Teaching with Technology: Tips, Techniques and Tools.” Classes are open to residents of the U.S. To register, visit the NTC Web site at http://nnlm.gov/ntcc/classes/schedule.html.

National Library of Medicine Ends Its Support for ToxSeek
Since there are now several comparable alternatives for users needing a federated search, such as Science.gov, NLM will realign the resources to support other mission-critical programs.
Attendees are invited to visit the NLM exhibit booth #321 (May 19-22) to meet NLM staff and see NLM Web products and services.
PubMed now supports versioned citations. Revisions, scientific updates, and updates of reviews are examples of content that could be versioned. A FAQ page is available.
Archived Webinar: Showcase of NLM APIs
Software developers are invited to join NLM data experts as they showcase NLM APIs. Webinar has already taken place, but has been archived for future viewing.

In 2011, over 5500 new books were added to the collections. As usual, the Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care textbooks were some of the most circulated items, accounting for over half of the total new item circulation. Below are the other popular items that were added to the collections and circulated in 2011. Keep in mind, the criteria for this list required that the item was added to a Mayo library collection in 2011. It’s a diverse list from a variety of Mayo libraries, and shows what a wide audience the Mayo libraries reach.

New Blog Chronicles the Creation and Journey of NLM’s Healing Totem Pole
In October, the National Library of Medicine will open a new exhibition, Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness. The exhibition, which will examine concepts of health and medicine among contemporary American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawai’ians, will feature a healing totem pole intended to promote good health. As a prelude to the exhibition, the totem will travel from Washington state, where it was created, to the NLM, where it will stand.

The National Library of Medicine Haz-Map has been updated. Haz-Map now includes 1,212 new chemical agents and twelve chemical categories with significance regarding occupational exposure.
