Melissa Rethlefsen attended and participated in a panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association on September 27 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Michael Homan attended and presented at the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) annual meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, August 8-16.
Mayo Librarians at MLA 2010
The Medical Library Association (MLA) held its annual meeting in Washington, DC. This year’s theme was Reflect & Connect. Mayo Clinic librarians were active participants at MLA this year, both as presenters and in leadership roles.
J. Michael Homan, last year’s Janet Doe lecturer, introduced this year’s lecturer, Ana Cleveland, to a packed house. Dr. Cleveland, who is a professor at the University of North Texas, gave a talk entitled, “Miles to Go Before We Sleep.”

Dottie Hawthorne served on the MLA Scholarship Jury, the jury that awards a scholarship of up to $5,000.00 to a student who shows excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health sciences librarianship.
Melissa Rethlefsen co-presented a poster, Connecting with public health librarians: we’re aTwitter about social networking, with Emily Vardell, librarian at the Louis Calder Memorial Library, University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. The poster discussed the Public Health/Health Administration Section’s use of Twitter, Facebook, and a blog to connect with its members.

Celebrating Diversity: Partner Appreciation Recognition
The College of Medicine’s Office for Diversity “Partner Appreciation Celebration” was held January 27, 2010 to honor 13 staff with Diversity Champion Awards. Awardees were recognized for “their unwavering support, commitment to making diversity one of Mayo’s greatest assets, and contributions to the College of Medicine office for Diversity educational programs.” Faculty and staff were recognized for tirelessly supporting programs through mentoring, enabling student rotations, providing career development presentations and giving students a glimpse into Mayo’s culture.”
