Working in the History of Medicine Library
I’ve always enjoyed reading. Browsing through bookstores and antique shops looking at books both old and new fascinates me. Handling old books and thinking about the many other hands that have touched the same book, leafed through the same pages, and enjoyed the same printed words, piques my imagination. (more…)

Mayo Foundation History of Medicine Society
The Mayo Foundation History of Medicine Society will host the Edward C. Stafne, D.D.S. History of Medicine Program on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, in Geffen Auditorium located on the subway level of the Gonda Building. A complimentary light buffet will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the lecture at 6:00 p.m. Featured speaker, Susan E. Lederer, Ph.D., will present Speaking of Operations: How Surgery Became Entertaining in Early 20th Century America. Dr. Lederer is Professor and Chair of Medical History and Bioethics, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, Wisconsin.

Mayo Clinic Medical Models: Education, Science and Art in Wax
The Mayo Clinic Historical Unit (MHU) is responsible for an extensive collection of historical artifacts and archival materials detailing more than one hundred years of Mayo Clinic history and its global impact on medical science. The MHU collection includes approximately 2,800 – 3,000 medical wax models, historically known as Medical Moulage. (more…)

¡Rumbo– Chile!
In late 2008 I was invited by Clínica Alemana of Santiago, Chile to visit their facility and meet with their staff to discuss library services at Mayo Clinic. Clínica Alemana is a modern multi-specialty private group practice with a 350-bed hospital and more than 600 physicians and 3200 allied health staff. It is affiliated with the College of Medicine at the Universidad del Desarrollo. Mayo Clinic and Clínica Alemana have had a Memorandum of Understanding since the mid-1990s. (more…)
