Current Awareness – Connecting You to Selected Journals in the Mayo Clinic Libraries

August 3, 2011 at 11:14 am

The Mayo Clinic Libraries recently updated and enhanced its Current Awareness Service.  Current Awareness helps you keep “current” by receiving Table of Contents e-alerts from journals as they are published.  Access Current Awareness under Quick Links on the Library’s homepage and log in to sign up for your journals.

One of the main features of this application is the delivery via e-mail of the latest Table of Contents from journals that are subscribed to by the Mayo Clinic Libraries.  In most cases, your e-alerts have active links to the full-text articles.  For journals that are available in print only in the Mayo Clinic Libraries, a PDF of the contents pages will be e-mailed. Request articles by responding to the e-mail message indicating which article(s) you’d like and the article(s) will be scanned and delivered electronically.  Login to Current Awareness with your Mayo Clinic LAN ID and password, and begin exploring the wealth of journals available.

Browse an alphabetic list of journal titles by selecting the “Journals” tab or browse subject lists of journals by clicking the “Subjects” tab.  Clicking the check boxes next to the journal titles automatically adds the e-alerts for the journals that will be sent to you as new issues become available. Remember that there is no limit to the number of journals you can subscribe to!

After you have made your selections, a new tab appears in Current Awareness called “My Alerts.”  If you decide to un-subscribe to your journals, go to “My Alerts” and un-check the boxes.

You can also use Current Awareness as a tool for helping you decide which journals to submit your articles for publication.  The journal titles in Current Awareness have active links to publishers’ web sites where you can often find author instructions, contents pages of past issues, sign-ups for RSS feeds, and additional information about the journal.

Be sure to click the “What’s New” tab to see journals that have been recently added to Current Awareness. Journals that have been added within the last month are featured under this tab.

We have enjoyed hearing from some of our Current Awareness users about this improved library service:

  • Thank you so much for your continued work on providing Table of Contents and articles to me. It means a lot and makes me a much better, and more well rounded, employee.
  • I love the new site. I like the different tabs that make it easy to see what you want to see — lists of journals, subjects, your own selections. It is also so easy to subscribe and unsubscribe. The tab labels are accurate descriptions–one does not have to hunt under several tabs to figure out which one contains the information you are looking for.”
  • Just getting a chance to check out the updated Current Awareness Service from our Mayo Library.  All I can say is WOW!!

Log-in to Current Awareness now from the Library homepage or at (Mayo Clinic only)  to begin your journal discovery!
