Mayo Historical Unit Update: Summer Intern; Transfer of RMH Archives
The Mayo Historical Unit was fortunate to have Sam Edge as a summer intern, Sam is a 2013 senior from Stewartville High School. Sam works part time at the Stewartville Public Library so archival work was something new! Karen Koka, Mayo’s archivist, explained archival processing to him and worked closely with Sam on recently transferred materials on medical exhibits, photographs, and miscellaneous publications from Media Support Services. Sam was able to get hands on experience appraising the materials (determining if the item was appropriate to keep), organizing the collection, learning archival storage standards, and creating a container list. It was a great experience for all involved and we wish Sam the best in his future endeavors.
Another project that kept the Historical Unit staff busy this summer was the transfer of the Rochester Methodist Hospital Archives to the Historical Unit. Rochester Methodist Hospital’s history dates back to 1954 when dedication ceremonies for the newly formed hospital in downtown Rochester were held. Since then, the historical memory of the hospital has primarily been under the care of Billie Needham. She has done a fabulous job of preserving the collection and sharing the hospital’s history with others. This collection will soon be added to Mayo Archives Xplorer (MAX) and be available to researchers. Requests to review the materials can be made by contacting Nicole Babcock at firstname.lastname@example.org.
