Rumbo a Rochester!

October 29, 2013 at 2:34 pm

During the week of August 4, 2013 Plummer Library hosted two visitors from the Clínica Alemana in Santiago, Chile. Cecilia Pacheco, director of the Medical Information Center, and Mariela (Mely) Wijnant, Director of Medical Development,  hosted me at their facility in March of 2009. Four years later we were able to host them in Rochester, Minnesota.

We lined up a very busy week for them. Since one of Cecilia’s passions is teaching evidence-based medicine (she has participated in the McMasters University EBM workshops), we had her prepare a presentation  on the resources she uses in her EBM classes. We, in turn, explained our processes for doing systematic reviews. As for library tours, you may not know it, but there are 11 libraries around the Mayo Clinic Rochester campus– from staff libraries to patient libraries and patient education libraries– and we arranged for Cecilia and Mely to tour all of them. They collected brochures and pamphlets at every stop, and a bunch of mandala coloring books from the Cancer Education Library.

We also threw in tours of the Simulation Center, Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center, the Carillon, Assisi Heights (home to the Sisters of St. Francis) and a day trip to the La Crosse campus of the Mayo Clinic Health System. Cecilia and Mely even got to experience Thursdays on 1st and 3rd. They were quite exhausted at the end of the week (one of them confessed to taking a three-hour nap.)
